Shouting Out Loud is the the very first text to dive into The Raincoats' pioneering career, and chronicles all of the band's eras and positions them within a larger scene of music innovation and experimentation. Though members have changed across the eras, they have remained a feminist, queer, and BIPOC-forward collective.
Formed in 1977 in London, The Raincoats and later, their indie label Rough Trade, became arguably the most pioneering and challenging female band of the post-punk era, going on to inspire a new wave of DIY and queercore artists.
Shouting Out Loud features interviews with Kim Gordon and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Courtney Love, Liz Phair, Kathleen Hanna, Stephanie Phillips of Big Joanie, and more, and will appeal to not just punk and/or music readers, but also to feminist readers, particularly those who are interested in feminist historical correctives in the music industry and other creative fields.
