Edition of 20. The Williams College Chamber Choir, under the direction of Anna Lent performed composer- David Lang’s “when i am alone”, alongside Amy Podmore’s sculptural wall installation, Audience at MASS MoCA on February 22, 2025.
Embracing nuance and ambiguity, the two pieces together reflect the harmonies and balances, as well as the contradictions and paradoxes, of what it means to be both an individual and a citizen of this world.
This recording of “when i am alone” features vocals by Caroline Shaw and was produced and arranged by Jody Elff, courtesy of Cantaloupe Music (cantaloupemusic.com).
The b-side compiles the ambient sounds heard in Amy Podmore’s exhibit at MASS MoCA, Audience. Podmore’s plaster casts, made from found wicker baskets and cornucopias, are embedded with motorized eyes set into the woven warp and weft of the basket. Individually, they blink away nearly inaudibly. But together, the sea of fluttering eyeballs emits a din both unsettling and oddly comforting. As their eyes sleepily fall shut and whip open, the museum visitor becomes the one being uncannily watched back.
David Lang's music is published by Red Poppy Music and G. Ricordi & Co., New York (ASCAP) and is distributed worldwide by the Universal Music Publishing Group.
