“Dawn is not the usual apocalypse story. One of the most interesting questions it asks is, what does colonialism look like without authoritarianism or the routine use of violence? It’s kind of the neoliberal dream of purely cultural domination under the guise of free will and freedom, controlling the population through incentives and through care rather than force. But it’s Butler, so there’s never obvious good and evil, instead we get the messiness of interdependency and codependency and some of the absolute hottest interspecies sex.”
