This Means Everything to Me is the first monograph dedicated to contemporary American artist EJ Hill, offering a comprehensive exploration of his dynamic practice across painting, performance, sculpture, and installation from 2009 to the present. Through essays, critical reflections, and personal insights, the book delves into the central themes of endurance, faith, redemption, and resistance that define Hill’s work.The monograph presents a detailed retrospective of Hill’s most significant projects, from early durational performances to large-scale public art commissions.

Notably, it examines Brake Run Helix (2022), a functional, rideable rollercoaster Hill installed inside the halls of MASS MoCA. Curator Alexandra Foradas analyzes EJ Hill’s use of rollercoasters in his art in her contribution to the book, finding that “learning and seeking joy is a radical act, especially when living in the US, which for centuries has systematically denied Black, brown, poor, and queer people access to experiences of joy and spaces of leisure, including amusement parks. Many museums and educational institutions-like amusement parks-have prohibitively high admission prices, placing access to them beyond the means of many; EJ Hill asks us to interrogate this practice from within.”
