Aperture’s first record release is a celebratory collection of classic and contemporary Black music made throughout the Diaspora, including blistering hits by Jamaican dancehall legend Tenor Saw, North American guitar phenom Jeff Parker, British funk powerhouse Cymande, South African artist-singer-activist Miriam Makeba, and more…
Sounds from the Black Atlantic expands upon the ethos of the best-selling photobook As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic (2021), a compilation of images from African diasporic culture, all from The Wedge Collection—Canada’s largest assemblage of works by Black artists, founded by Toronto-based collector Dr. Kenneth Montague. With over one hundred works by Black artists from Canada, the United States, Great Britain, the Caribbean, South America, and throughout the African continent, the book and its associated touring exhibition provide a timely exploration of Black identity on both sides of the Atlantic.
