Ohan Breiding’s Belly of a Glacier (Chapter 1: Ancient Ice Archive) features essays and visual works that explore the archival capacities of ice, speculating on the simultaneity of past-present-future time in our material world, and the prospect of cultivating ecological care through a queer/ trans lens. The project starts from Breiding’s research into the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) in Colorado, an ancient archive where ice cores from glaciers that no longer exist are stored, and where scientists study atmospheric debris—volcanic ash, meteor particulates, greenhouse gases—that lingers in the materiality of ice crystals.
The book includes contributions by Alena Williams, Astrida Neimanis, Carrie Ayagaduk Ojanen, Cauleen Smith, Cleo Wölfle Hazard, Jeanne Vaccaro, Jess Arndt, Jules Gimbrone, Susan Stryker, and Svetlana Kitto. Design by nicole killian.
